R 1300 GS: Discover the 3 New BMW Models That Will Follow

The new BMW R 1300 GS will be on sale from November 2023, with further R 1300 models with the new boxer engine to follow from 2024.  MOTORRAD takes a look into the crystal ball and now shows you: R 1300 R, R 1300 RS and R 1300 RT.

Originally, the letter "R" in the name of BMW motorcycle models stood for "wheel", in contrast to the aircraft engines produced by the company. However, over time, this letter has become the symbol of the Boxer models. Since autumn 2023, BMW has decided to profoundly innovate its range, introducing the new BMW R 1300 GS and its accessories at the end of 2023.

The new Boxer engine of the BMW R 1300 GS

On 28 September 2023, exactly one hundred years after the launch of the first BMW, the R 32, the company unveiled the new R 1300 GS, an enduro-type touring bike, in Berlin. Available on the market from November 2023, the R 1300 GS impresses with a newly developed 1,300 cc boxer engine, which delivers 145 hp (107 kW) at 7,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm.

Also coming soon: R 1300 R, R 1300 RS and R 1300 RT

The new Boxer 1300 engine will not be limited to the GS, but will also be implemented in the R, RS and RT models. Although there are no spy shots or leaks of these versions yet, MOTORRAD, in collaboration with designer Kar Lee, has speculated on how these new models could look (see image gallery above).

The new BMW R 1300 RS

Let's start with the RS: BMW recently revised this model, introducing changes that include LED daytime running lights, LED indicators and new options. Among them, the possibility of replacing the high handlebars with tubular ones and opting for a solo seat. The current version of the RS is likely to remain in production until autumn 2024, while the updated version with the 1300 engine could arrive only in 2025.

New solutions for the frame

The developments around the new 1300 engine also include structural innovations in the chassis. The R 1300 GS adopts a new main frame made of steel with sheet metal shells and a bolted aluminum rear frame. The R 1300 RS could follow a similar approach, with an upside-down telescopic fork in place of the Telelever, but retaining the large front radiator for cooling.

A sportier touch for the RS

It is reasonable to expect that BMW will make the RS even sportier than before. The front lighting could be integrated into a more compact fairing that fits closely to the frame, without unnecessary edges, giving the bike a more harmonious and light appearance. The slimmer and more sloping rear end naturally continues the line of the aluminum frame, helping to reduce the overall weight. More power and less weight: an ideal combination for the new RS.

New radar systems for BMW

Despite the weight reduction, the technology remains state-of-the-art. The RS will feature a wide range of assistance systems, including blind spot radar and adaptive cruise control. These devices will be discreetly integrated into the structure of the bike, ensuring safety and comfort while riding.

The new BMW R 1300 R

The R 1300 R will also benefit from the new Boxer engine, with a large radiator replacing the Telelever at the front. The upside-down telescopic fork will still ensure excellent performance. The R's design will feature a slimmer, more muscular aluminum rear end, emphasizing the power of its 145 hp.

LED headlight and redesigned silencer

A small but significant change concerns the LED headlights, which will be more compact and integrated into the fork design, making the bike visually slimmer. The silencer will also be reduced in size, made of stainless steel with almost invisible welding, while maintaining functionality for everyday use and travel.

The new BMW R 1300 RT

The R 1300 RT will be the flagship touring model, featuring a new boxer engine and a reinforced frame structure to handle high loads. While keeping stability as a priority, the RT will offer superior protection against wind and weather thanks to an improved aerodynamic design.

Fuel consumption and technological features

The new aerodynamic design of the R 1300 RT will reduce fuel consumption, increasing the range to around 600 kilometres with a 25-litre tank. The RT will also feature an advanced lighting system, heated seats, an electrically adjustable windscreen and a comprehensive audio system, with a connectivity solution for Android and Apple devices.

Availability of new models

BMW plans to launch the R 1300 R, RS and RT in 2024, with the possibility of seeing them on the market only in 2025. However, the wait will be justified by the improvements promised by the new Boxer engine and structural innovations that will reduce the overall weight of the bikes.

The R 1300 GS has already caused a stir in the motorcycle world, but BMW is not stopping there. With the promise of constant innovation and a commitment to excellence, the Bavarian brand has already announced that three more models will follow the R 1300 GS. These new models will carry the torch of quality and high performance that BMW has become accustomed to, but with some innovative surprises that will make every ride a unique experience.

The first of three new models expected from BMW will represent a revolution for off-road enthusiasts. Built to master difficult trails but also to ensure a smooth ride on paved roads, it will take many characteristics from the proven design of the R 1300 GS, including the reliability and power of the boxer engine, which has made this series legendary. However, it will integrate new suspension and electronic management technologies, designed to enhance safety and ease of use.

A second model will focus on urban mobility. While the R 1300 GS is designed as a versatile touring machine, this new model will have a more compact and maneuverable appearance, ideal for city traffic. It will enjoy the same elegant lines typical of BMW design but with a particular focus on maneuverability and practicality, making it perfect for everyday travel.

Finally, BMW also has a sports model planned that will delight lovers of speed and pure performance. This model will be equipped with an even more powerful engine than the R 1300 GS, but with a lighter and more aerodynamic structure, optimized for the track. The design lines will be aggressive and futuristic, ready to capture attention not only for its performance but also for its distinctive appearance.

Overall, these new models will not only expand BMW’s already impressive range but will also offer motorcycle enthusiasts increasingly dedicated and specialized choices.Whether you are an adventurer, an urban commuter, or an aspiring speed champion, these new bikes will undoubtedly be a great option to consider. With these additions, BMW not only maintains but raises the bar for motorcycle excellence, proving once again why it is a leader in the industry.
